Insights into the calendar

Fascination 2024 - Shagya Araberstuten

She is an admirable and very unusual woman. She has an incredibly big heart, a wonderful laugh, and her sincerity and honesty are truly moving. And she sets so much in motion: Princess Alia Al Hussein of Jordan takes care of so many social issues, of women and children, of donkeys and horses, and the wild animals in the destroyed zoos in Jordan, Palestine and Syria. She is the oldest sister of the King of Jordan and also a person in whom he places great trust. Many years ago, Princess Alia was in fact the reason why I actually started photographing horses. We developed a friendship that I cannot value enough. But that is a very long story of its own. Several years after that first photoshoot, Princess Alia made a long-felt dream come true for me, something so incredibly complex and great that I must tell you about it: She gave me a truck, 6 of her Arab mares, 2 stallions and 8 men from her stud, plus a security officer, a driver and another officer - for a very special journey through Jordan.

All my dreams as a photographer came true during this journey. I was allowed to photograph her horses running free in the Wadi Rum desert - very dramatically with an upcoming sandstorm. We even had the sensational permission to photograph the horses in the ancient rock city of Petra. In order to do this, a whole unit of intelligence personnel had been busy acquiring special permits from the police and various ministries, so that we could let Princess Alia’s horses run free and keep out the tourists during this period. This unique photograph was taken in front of the Khazne al-Firaun mausoleum, a place where hundreds of tourists normally congregate.

This was probably one of the most exhausting weeks of my life - I often woke up during the night and wondered whether everything would turn out well. It was not until after all horses had returned safely to the Royal Stables in Aman that I was able to take a deep breath again and fall into a long, dreamless sleep. These pictures are constant evidence of this fairy tale come true - thanks to Princess Alia.
